NLG hopes to initiate humanitarian efforts through promoting awareness of the challenges refugees and migrants face through fundraising events, direct volunteering and in-kind support efforts, and by networking with local and international entities. NLG-UC San Diego is supported by the U.S. Department of State and aims to partner with other university chapters, government agencies, and non-governmental and international organizations with the goal of creating a community of advocates to support refugees.
The three core pillars of the organization are education, child protection, and adolescent and youth engagement. Guiding the three core pillars are four key strategies and outcomes:
1) To increase the supply of and access to services.
2) To improve the quality of services.
3) To address barriers to services and increase demand.
4) To advocate for legal and policy reforms to improve national education and child protection services.
